The Facts a Body Can't Feel

There is a scar in the middle of your chromosome 2, a broken vitamin-C gene you share with every ape, a tailbone you grow and lose before birth. The evidence for evolution, deep time and the Big Bang is overwhelming, and a lot of it is sitting inside your own body — yet huge numbers of people, some of them sharp, refuse it anyway. I set out to blame religion, and the data wouldn't let me. The real reason turns out to be stranger and closer to home: on anything woven into who we are, the mind quietly trades the question "is this true?" for "whose side am I on?", and being clever makes that worse, not better. A look at what science actually knows, why we resist it, and the surprisingly hopeful thing the data says about changing our minds.

Somewhere in your cells, near the middle of your second chromosome, there is a scar.

Two separate chromosomes were fused there, end to end, in an ancestor of yours who lived long before there were people. The join left marks that have no business being where they are. The tips of every chromosome are wrapped in protective caps called telomeres, a short sequence of DNA repeated over and over, and that sequence turns up only at the ends. In the middle of your chromosome 2 it turns up anyway, two runs of it pointing head to head, precisely where two tips would have met and welded (IJdo et al., PNAS 1991). Further along there is a second scar: a dead, switched-off centromere, the leftover control tower of one of the two chromosomes, still sitting where the working one sits on the matching chimpanzee chromosome, no longer steering anything (BMC Genomics 2022). Every other great ape carries those two chromosomes separately. We are the branch that joined them, which is why we have forty-six and they have forty-eight.

You are carrying the receipt around in every cell you own.

I lead with this because it is the sort of thing that is very hard to un-see once you have seen it, and because almost nobody has. The facts I want to talk about here are among the best-established in all of science, and they are also among the most widely refused. A great many people, some of them plainly sharper than I am, look at the age of the Earth, at the shared descent of living things, at the beginning of the universe, and decline. I wanted to understand why. I assumed, as you probably do, that I already knew the answer, and that the answer was religion. The data made me put that assumption down. It turns out the reason is stranger and closer to home, and it has little to do with God. But first the receipts, because the argument only works once you feel how solid they are.

The heirloom nobody can repair

Your body cannot make vitamin C. Almost every other animal can; a goat makes its own, which is why a goat never got scurvy on a long voyage and a sailor did. The machine for building vitamin C is a gene called GULO, and yours is broken. Not missing, broken, still sitting in your genome as a wrecked draft riddled with the wrong letters, switched off (Nishikimi et al. 1994).

Here is the part that matters. The same gene is broken, in the same way, in every monkey and every ape. And it still works fine in lemurs and lorises, the primates on the far side of an ancient split. The most economical reading is the obvious one: a single ancestor, sixty-odd million years back, took the hit, and every one of its descendants inherited the same dead appliance, unrepaired, all the way down to you and the chimpanzee at the zoo (overview). Guinea pigs also lost the gene, and creationists like to raise them, but guinea pigs broke a different part of it, on their own line, long after. Two houses can lose power for unrelated reasons. When they lose power because the same wire was cut in a shared basement, that tells you they share a basement.

The genome is full of this. Ancient viruses splice their own DNA into the cells they infect, and once in a long while they land in an egg or a sperm and ride down the generations, a molecular typo dropped at a random page and line of a three-billion-letter book. Around eight percent of your DNA is this viral wreckage. Line up the human and chimpanzee genomes and the same insertions sit at the same coordinates: of the forty-two retrovirus families catalogued in the chimp, forty are parked at the identical spots in us (Polavarapu et al. 2006). One shared typo at one shared coordinate could be chance. The same typo at coordinate after coordinate is a photocopy.

None of this is the cartoon everyone pictures, the one where a hunched monkey straightens up through a lineup of increasingly upright figures into a man. That picture is the single most misleading image in biology, and it is where the whole "we come from monkeys" quarrel starts. We did not descend from any monkey now alive, or any chimp. A chimpanzee is not a rung below you on a ladder. It is a cousin on a branch beside you, and the two branches meet at a shared trunk about six or seven million years back. Evolution is a tree, not a staircase. Nobody is at the top of a tree.

I could keep going. Whales carry a pelvis with no legs to hold up, a hip bone floating loose in the body wall, and forty-million-year-old whale fossils still have the little hind legs attached (Berkeley). Their ankles kept a bone shaped like a deer's, the double-pulley astragalus of a hoofed mammal, and when the fossils turned up they confirmed what the DNA had already predicted: that whales are hoofed mammals gone back to the sea, close cousins of the hippo. Your own tailbone is the reabsorbed stub of a tail you grow and lose before you are born. The force of the case was never any single item. It is that a dozen unrelated ways of looking, the bones, the broken genes, the viral scars, the ankles, the DNA, all draw the same family tree, in the same order, without conferring. That convergence is what the word evidence means, and it is very hard to fake. Nobody is faking it.

The clock that isn't carbon

Now pull back from life to the ground it stands on. The Earth is about 4.54 billion years old, and the way we know is worth a minute, because the usual objection aims at the wrong target. People say: carbon dating makes assumptions, rates could have changed, you can't measure the unmeasurable. But carbon dating has nothing to do with it. Carbon-14 decays with a half-life of 5,730 years and is useless past about fifty thousand; against the age of the Earth it is a stopwatch trying to time the seasons. The Earth's age comes from uranium turning to lead in the oldest solid objects in the solar system, meteorites, first measured properly by Clair Patterson in the 1950s (age of Earth).

What makes it trustworthy is not one clock but several that shouldn't agree and do. Uranium-238 runs down to lead with a half-life of about 4.47 billion years. Uranium-235 runs to a different lead with a half-life of 704 million years, more than six times faster. They sit in the same crystal, ticking at wildly different speeds, and they read out the same age. When two clocks built on different physics show the same time, you can keep insisting the time is wrong, but you are no longer being skeptical, you are just refusing. A single zircon crystal from the Australian outback, smaller than a grain of sand, dates to 4.4 billion years, older than any mountain range that has ever risen and worn flat (Wilde et al., Nature 2001).

The universe is older, 13.8 billion years, measured a completely different way, from the faint heat left over from its early hot state (Planck 2018). Numbers like these do not fit in a human head, and pretending they do is dishonest, so here is the one scale that helped me. Compress the whole 13.8 billion years into a single calendar year. The Earth forms in late summer. The dinosaurs die on the 30th of December. Every pharaoh, every war and love letter and equation ever written down happens in the last fourteen seconds before midnight on the 31st (Cosmic Calendar). We are a fourteen-second-old species that reconstructed the entire calendar, working from rocks and starlight and the arithmetic of decay. Some of us cannot stand what it says.

It did not explode

And the beginning. Here the popular picture is not just fuzzy, it is backwards, and the name is to blame.

"The Big Bang" makes everyone imagine an explosion: a bomb going off at some point in the dark, hurling matter outward into empty space. Every word of that is wrong. There was no point, no center, no surrounding dark for anything to fly into. Space itself is what expanded, everywhere at once (NASA). Think of raisins in rising dough: as the dough swells, every raisin drifts away from every other, and no raisin is the center, because the expanding thing is the dough, not the raisins in it. The galaxies are the raisins. The dough is space. Nothing is exploding; the loaf is getting bigger.

We are not guessing. If the universe was once hot and dense and then spread out and cooled, that early fire should have left an afterglow, faint and even, reaching us from every direction. In 1964 two radio astronomers found it, by accident, as a hiss in an antenna they could not get rid of. They cleaned the horn, evicted the pigeons nesting inside it and scrubbed out the droppings, and the hiss stayed, the same from every part of the sky (APS). It was the leftover heat of the young universe, chilled now to 2.7 degrees above absolute zero, and it matches the prediction so well that no rival theory has reproduced it. The light around you as you read this includes a whisper from the moment the universe first turned transparent.

There is a detail I like too much to leave out. The theory of the expanding universe was written down in 1927 by Georges Lemaître, two years before Edwin Hubble measured the galaxies flying apart. Lemaître was a Catholic priest (AMNH). And the offhand name that stuck, "Big Bang," was coined by Fred Hoyle, an astronomer who thought the whole idea was wrong and spent his career fighting it (history). A believer built the theory. A skeptic named it. Hold onto that, because it wrecks the tidy story I sat down to write.

Not the reason I thought

So here is the puzzle in full. The evidence is overwhelming, it converges from a dozen directions, much of it is sitting inside your own body, and it gets refused anyway, at scale. In the United States, a country with more Nobel laureates than any other, roughly six in ten adults accept that humans evolved from earlier species (Pew 2013, Gallup 2024). And how many say it depends on something with no bearing on biology: the wording. Ask white evangelical Protestants the older, two-step way and two-thirds say humans have always existed in their present form; ask them a single question that lets them say God guided the process, and a majority instead accept that humans evolved (Pew 2019). Same people, opposite answer, and the only thing that changed was the shape of the sentence. That should bother you. It means much of what looks like disbelief isn't about the facts.

I was sure the driver was religion, and religion is certainly in it. But the numbers refuse the clean war-story. Creationism in America is not rising, it is falling, from a peak of forty-seven percent in 1999 to a record-low thirty-seven percent in 2024, while the share who accept evolution with no divine hand in it has never been higher (Gallup 2024). Most religious Americans are not creationists at all: mainline Protestants, Catholics, and the unaffiliated mostly accept evolution, and it is one specific group, white evangelicals, who stand out (Pew). The Catholic Church declined to condemn evolution in 1950 and, in 1996, called it "more than a hypothesis." Over fifteen thousand Christian clergy have signed a letter calling it a foundational truth. The Pope got there before most of the public did.

If it were simply religion, or simply ignorance, then teaching people more science would close the gap. It doesn't. This is the finding that rearranged my thinking. The psychologist Dan Kahan gave people questions about charged topics and measured their scientific literacy, expecting, as everyone does, that the more literate would converge on the evidence. They did the opposite. On identity-loaded issues, higher literacy made people more divided, not less, because each side used its extra skill to defend the position it already held (Kahan et al., Nature Climate Change 2012). In one experiment he handed people a table of numbers. Labeled as a skin-cream trial, the better someone was at math, the more often they got the right answer. Labeled as a study of gun control, the same table, the better someone was at math, the more often they got it wrong, whenever the true answer cut against their politics (Motivated Numeracy 2017). Intelligence did not make them better judges. It made them better lawyers.

That is the actual engine, and it has little to do with churches. Kahan's one-line version has stayed with me: what people say they believe about these questions does not report what they know, it announces who they are. The mind runs two questions that feel identical from the inside. One is "is this true." The other is "whose side am I on." On anything that has been folded into an identity, the second quietly answers for the first, and it does so without telling you, dressed up in the language of the first. This is why a person can be rigorous at work and immovable at dinner. Nobody experiences themselves as denying evidence. They experience themselves as loyal, and as seeing through the other tribe's propaganda.

Religion is one of the flags this happens under, and for some communities the strongest one. But it is a flag, not the mechanism, and the mechanism will fly other flags just as readily: a political party, a nation, a profession, a self-image. Which is where the essay turns back on me, and on you. The reflex that makes a creationist wave away the fossils is the one that makes me wave away a study whose conclusion I dislike. I would like to think I only ever run the "is this true" question. I don't, and neither do you. What separates us from the person we call a denier is not that we lack the reflex. We all have it. The difference is whether we have trained ourselves to notice it.

The correction that corrected itself

There is a convenient story, popular among people who like data, that goes: facts don't work, telling someone the truth only entrenches them, the backfire is real, so why bother. I believed it too. It has a name, the "backfire effect," and a famous early study behind it. It is also, on the best evidence we now have, mostly false.

When researchers ran the test properly, at scale, the backfire did not show up. One set of experiments put more than ten thousand people in front of corrections on fifty-two of the most inflammatory issues its authors could find, and turned up not a single case of it; people, on the whole, moved toward the accurate information, even when it cut against their own side (Wood & Porter 2019). The scientist who first described the backfire effect has since spent years arguing it was overblown, that corrections usually do help, though the gains are fragile and decay (Nyhan, PNAS 2021). Sit with what that is: a researcher publicly overturning his own famous result because the newer data outvoted it. That is the method doing its job.

Because trusting data is not, in the end, a matter of intelligence. The gun-control table showed the clever failing this test as readily as anyone, sometimes worse. The skill it takes is smaller and less flattering than being smart. It is the willingness to notice the moment your mind stops weighing something and starts defending it, the moment "is this true" gets swapped for "whose side am I on," and to keep looking anyway, especially when the answer is going to cost you something, or make you a cousin instead of a summit.

We are the fourteen-second-old species that read the whole calendar. We managed it by building instruments that check what the senses can't feel and outrank what we would prefer to be true. The scars in your cells say you are related to every living thing that has ever lived. The clocks in the rocks say the ground beneath you is unthinkably old. The hiss from every corner of the sky says it all began, everywhere at once, and cooled. None of that asks you to be brilliant. It asks you to let the world be bigger than the story you walked in with, and to loosen your grip on the one you would rather keep.
